History

The delivery of sexual health, reproductive health and HIV nursing is an essential component of the health system in Australia.

Prior to 1991, there was no professional organisation body reflecting the needs of these specialist nurses leading to the establishment of The Australasian Sexual Health and HIV Nurses Association Inc. (ASHHNA Inc.).

The Australasian Sexual Health Nurses Association (ASHNA) resulted form the need for such a professional organisation, and at an open meeting in November 1991 ASHNA was formed.

ASHHNA Inc. has members in all States and Territories across Australia and fulfils the criteria to be recognised as a National Nursing (NNO) a diverse range of specialty nursing organisations from Australia.
